| Grade 1+.
Exceptionally bold cross with all lions and castles visible in
the cross quadrants. The cross side legend is shifted 90
degrees counterclockwise and starts with a star at the 9 o'clock
position placing the date 1617
(note the very bold 7) between the 6 to 9 o'clock position.
Beautiful full shield with bold details
through out including the important mint and assayer marks P and
M at left. Assayer M held office in 1617, the first year
that coins were struck with dates at the Potosi mint and the
only year that the M assayer mark appears on a dated coin.
Dated coins from this assayer are very collectable and are relatively uncommon finds from the Atocha. Supplied with the
original photo type Certificate of Authenticity and a booklet "Shipwrecks
and Their Coins: Volume 1 - 1622 Spanish Treasure Fleet"
that provides details about the fleet and its coins.
This beautiful coin would rate in the top
5% of all those recovered from the Atocha wreck and is a must
buy for those desiring
the very best. |
