Grade 1 Atocha Coins

Grade 1 Atocha coins were salvaged from the interior most portion of the treasure chest, and thus exhibit minimal amounts of salt water damage.  Typically, they are clearly struck on both the obverse and reverse sides with the mintmark, assayer mark and denomination often all visible.  Atocha coins are supplied with the original photo type Certificate of Authenticity and a booklet "Shipwrecks and Their Coins: Volume 1 - 1622 Spanish Treasure Fleet" that provides details about the fleet and its coins.  Grade 1 coins are also supplied with the book "Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon", personally autographed by the author, Syd Jones.  Display your Atocha coin and Certificate of Authenticity in our multiple sleeved display folder.  Mount your Atocha coin in a 14k Gold Bezel.

Grade 1, a nice "as struck" coin with no signs of salt water corrosion, but with flatness on the cross side that obscures much of the cross details.  Because of the coin's very heavy weight and large diameter, lots of legend is visible around the edge, including the full King's ordinal III (Philip III) at the 5 o'clock position on the shield side.  The cross side details identify this coin as being struck in 1617 or later.  Supplied with the original photo type Certificate of Authenticity, a booklet "Shipwrecks and Their Coins: Volume 1 - 1622 Spanish Treasure Fleet" that provides details about the fleet and its coins, and the book "Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon", personally autographed by the author, Syd Jones.  An inexpensive grade 1 coin.

Grade 1+.  Exceptional full cross with all lions and castles clearly visible in the cross quadrants along with a 1619 date (full 161 and the bottom of the 9 are visible between the 10 and 12 o'clock position along the edge).  The cross side lions are transposed (located in the quadrants normally occupied by the castles).  Excellent deep struck shield with bold mint and assayer marks P and T at left.  Dated cobs, even partially dated ones, are very collectable and are relatively uncommon finds from the Atocha, particularly with beautiful, well centered details like this heavy weight specimen.  Supplied with the original Treasure Salvors, Inc. photo type Certificate of Authenticity, a booklet "Shipwrecks and Their Coins: Volume 1 - 1622 Spanish Treasure Fleet" that provides details about the fleet and its coins, and the book "Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon", personally autographed by the author, Syd Jones.

Grade 1, Nice full cross with both lions and one castle visible along with some legend along the right side edge.  Excellent, nearly full shield with bold assayer mark (monogrammed PAL) at left.  Coins of assayer PAL are rare, minted only in 1618, and are highly prized by those  collecting Atocha coins by assayer.  This excellent, corrosion free specimen stands out because of its particularly clear assayer mark and heavy weight.  Supplied with the original Huber style Treasure Salvors, Inc. photo type Certificate of Authenticity, a booklet "Shipwrecks and Their Coins: Volume 1 - 1622 Spanish Treasure Fleet" that provides details about the fleet and its coins, and the book "Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon", personally autographed by the author, Syd Jones.
